There are also some herbs that can act as expectorants as well. Basically, an expectorant makes the mucous thinner so that it can be expelled easier. Fennel is one such herb that has been used successfully in the past when it comes to treating inflammation of the mucous membranes. You can find fennel tea, as well as over-the-counter products that also contain it as an ingredient.

Licorice can also be a good natural remedy for coughs that are wet. Licorice has properties that are antiviral, antispasmodic, and antibacterial. It can also be used in relieving dry coughs, too. Licorice can be found in tea-form, as well as in fluid extracts. However, it should not be used for more than a week and pregnant women or anyone with a history of strokes, diabetes, or high blood pressure should stay away from it.

Lastly, Thyme is another herb that is used around the world for coughs that are both wet and dry. Thyme can help fight bacteria muscle spasms, as well as inflammation.
